Competition between the AFL and NFLDuring the AFL's beginnings, the NFL did not believe that the AFL had the power to compete with them. However, in order to become more competitive and profitable, the AFL exploited new television markets. As the AFL slowly became a more competitive league, a bidding war over the top college prospects began. Teams would try to out-bid each other for the top college prospects. Due to the massive amount of spending that this brought out, both leagues were at risk of having teams go bankrupt. A turning point in the competition between these two leagues was when the NFL signed Pete Gogolack, a kicker who was under contract with the AFL's Buffalo Bills . From there on, teams were constantly trying sign each other's players, proving that the AFL had just as much talent as the NFL, and thus creating much tension between the two leagues .
